Govt proposes toughening citizenship rules
Foreigners who want to marry Britons and settle here could face English language tests, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said Wednesday in proposals largely aimed at clamping down on forced marriage.
To protect those most at risk from such marriages -- largely found in Britain's South Asian communities -- Smith proposed raising from 18 to 21 the age for sponsoring a spouse to become a British citizen.

Britain opposes Taiwan referendum: Miliband
Britain opposes Taiwan's plan for a referendum on pushing for UN membership, Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Wednesday, adding that any "reckless manoeuvres" were to be "deplored."
Britain's policy towards Taiwan had not changed in the past 35 years, Miliband said after talks in London with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.

Brown may miss EU treaty signing
Prime Minister Gordon Brown may miss out on signing the controversial EU reform treaty in Lisbon next week, Downing Street has said.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband, or Europe Minister Jim Murphy, would sign on the UK's behalf if Mr Brown was not able to be present.

British style icon died after drinking weedkiller
Isabella Blow, the idiosyncratic British fashion stylist known for her garish hats and red lipstick, killed herself by taking 20 times the fatal dose of weedkiller, a coroner's inquest heard Wednesday.
The 48-year-old had previously tried to take her own life at least three times before -- by jumping off a bridge, ramming her car into a lorry and overdosing on tablets, her sister, Lavinia Verney, told the hearing.

HMRC admits seven security breaches
HM Revenue and Customs have suffered seven breaches of security of "some significance" involving the loss of personal data, the organisation's new acting chairman has disclosed.
Dave Hartnett said that the incidents had taken place since Revenue and Customs were merged into a single organisation in April 2005.
