Spain flirts with recession as property slump, crisis bite

Spain's economy shrank 0.2 percent in the third quarter, the central bank said Friday, leaving the country on the brink of recession, pummelled by a property slump and the global financial crisis.

US, European markets post solid gains

Wall Street shares bounced higher Friday, prompting solid gains in Europe at the end of a month of wild volatility and huge losses amid fears a deep recession lies ahead.

FTSE scores best week ever but worst October since 1987

Commodity stocks powered the top share index to a 2-percent gain on Friday and its strongest week on record, but the benchmark still bowed out of October with the worst monthly loss since the 1987 market crash.

Strikes planned in Germany's key metalworking sector: union

With a recession looming in Europe's biggest economy, Germany's largest industrial trade union IG Metall on Friday announced warning strikes this weekend in the key metalworking and electronics sector.
