CIA, Justice probe destruction of tapes
The Justice Department and CIA announced a joint inquiry Saturday into the spy agency's destruction of videotapes of interrogations of two suspected terrorists.
The review will determine whether a full investigation is warranted.
"I welcome this inquiry and the CIA will cooperate fully," CIA Director Mike Hayden said in a statement.

Oprah's star power to shine for Obama
Oprah and Hillary — two women so famous that they are known only by their first name — were vying for the attention of Iowa voters Saturday on opposing sides of the intensely close presidential campaign.
While Hillary Rodham Clinton has become a familiar face here as she pursues the Democratic presidential nomination, Oprah Winfrey was making her debut on the presidential campaign trail in support of Clinton rival Barack Obama.

Obama rocks at concert
The night before he was to campaign in Iowa with Oprah Winfrey, Sen. Barack Obama stopped by a rock concert fundraiser in Chicago and expressed confidence in his standing in the primary race.
"It turns out, we might win," he said, as the audience cheered. "It's possible. It is possible. They said it wasn't possible, but it is possible."

Huckabee Immigration Plan Emphasizes Security
Mike Huckabee, the Republican presidential candidate, released a plan for tougher immigration enforcement and border security yesterday, pledging to complete a border fence between the United States and Mexico by July 2010 and ruling out a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants unless they returned first to their country of origin.
Mr. Huckabee has taken heat in recent weeks from his rivals for the Republican nomination, especially after his impassioned defense at a Nov. 28 debate of merit scholarships to children of illegal immigrants while he was governor of Arkansas.

Diocese breaks with Episcopal Church
An Episcopal diocese in central California voted Saturday to split with the national denomination over disagreements about the role of gays and lesbians in the church.
Clergy and lay members of the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin voted 173-22 at their annual convention to remove all references to the national church from the diocese's constitution, according to spokeswoman Joan Gladstone.
