Stocks jump; Dow up more than 330
Wall Street barreled higher Wednesday for the second day in a row, propelling the Dow Jones industrials up more than 350 points after a Federal Reserve official hinted that the central bank may lower interest rates again.
Investors' renewed hopes for a rate cut added to their relief that companies that made losing bets on subprime mortgages, such as Citigroup Inc. and Freddie Mac, are coming up with ways to raise cash.

Crossing deserts risky in winter, too
Arizona's southern deserts are notorious for causing the deaths of illegal immigrants who try crossing miles of remote land in sizzling summer heat.
But winter can be nearly as bad for those trying to make it into the United States from Mexico. Temperatures can drop below freezing, snow and rainfall can soak migrants and shelter can be days away.

Minorities hit hardest by housing crisis
In May, Alvin Clavon received a foreclosure notice on the simple, Spanish-style house in South Los Angeles that he shares with his wife and three boys.
Clavon bought the place in 2003 with a fixed-rate loan. They painted the walls, fixed the yard and made friends with the neighbors, who let the Clavon boys pick their basil.

GOP contenders face video questioners
Republican presidential candidates faced a crowd of unusual debate questioners Wednesday night — everyday people who sent in video clips. CNN and YouTube sponsored the debate, the Republicans' eighth major confrontation of the 2008 campaign People from across the country submitted more than 3,500 videos posing questions; about 40 were to be broadcast in the unusual gathering six weeks before voting begins.

Muslim American disputes Romney's explanation of remarks in Henderson
Ijaz, an American businessman of Pakistani heritage, has written often on Muslim politics. Readers of this column may recall that Ijaz has considered moving to Nevada to run for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by powerhouse Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Ijaz appears well-informed on foreign policy issues and stresses his belief it is in America's best interest to have a Muslim citizen in a position of political authority. Although Ijaz's language during an interview was at times earthy, his intellect was impressive and his memory sharp.
