Reforming America's health-care system is a thorny election issue
IT IS obvious to anyone that the patient is ill. But the physicians agree on little else: not the underlying cause, certainly not the appropriate course of treatment and least of all which among them is best qualified to administer it. As they argue, the patient just gets sicker.

Stocks rally again on mortgage plan
Wall Street rallied once again Thursday as investors bet that companies hurt by the housing crisis will benefit from a government plan to help financially stretched homeowners and from another interest rate cut.
The Dow Jones industrial average surged more than 170 points after a nearly 200-point rise Wednesday.

Toll Brothers reports $81.8 million loss
Toll Brothers Inc., the nation's largest builder of luxury homes, reported its first quarterly loss in 21 years Thursday as the housing downturn that the company called the worst in four decades deepened.
"By many measures, fiscal 2007 was the most challenging of the 40 years that Toll Brothers has been in business," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert Toll said in a statement. "1974 was perhaps rougher, but the difficult times only lasted one year."

Ford recalls 1.1 million vehicles
Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling 1.17 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to fix an engine sensor that could lead to engine stalling.
The recalled vehicles are all from the 1997-2003 model years with 7.3 liter diesel engines, including the Ford E-Series van, Excursion full-size sport utility vehicle, and F-450 Super Duty and F-550 Super Duty trucks.
