Diana inquest bill approaches £4.5m - Eleven Rangers fans charged over UEFA Cup final violence - Fan rampage response 'appropriate'

Diana inquest bill approaches £4.5m

The cost of the inquests into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed now stands at £4.41 million.

New figures show that the bill for the long-running hearing rose by more than £70,000 in its final days.

Eleven Rangers fans charged over UEFA Cup final violence

Eleven Glasgow Rangers football fans were charged by British police Thursday after violence erupted following the UEFA Cup final, drawing condemnation from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The clashes Wednesday in Manchester, northwest England, as Russia's Zenit Saint Petersburg beat Rangers 2-0, has shocked authorities who have made huge efforts to stamp out football violence.

Fan rampage response 'appropriate'

Police defended their response to rampaging Rangers fans as "appropriate" as they blamed a minority of yobs for violent clashes which marred the Uefa Cup final.

The Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, Justine Curran, said they had no choice but to act against supporters who she said behaved like a "baying pack of wolves".

CCTV footage in Manchester city centre showed a lone officer being set upon by fans who kicked him on the ground as he faced up to about 200 charging supporters.

Rangers thugs 'could hurt 2018 bid'

Rangers fans could have jeopardised England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup, Gordon Brown has warned.

Supporters of the Scottish Premier League club were involved with violent clashes with police in Manchester after their team lost Zenit St Petersburg in the final of the Uefa Cup.

A fan of Rangers' Russian opponents was also stabbed, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
