Liquid Bomb Plotters Receive Life Sentences
Three men have been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of plotting to kill hundreds of people in a terrorist attack. Ibrahim Savant, 29, Arafat Waheed Khan, 28, and 25-year-old Waheed Zaman planned to detonate home-made liquid bombs on transatlantic jets. A judge at Woolwich Crown Court in London told them they would serve minimum terms of 20 years. Mr Justice Holroyde said the men intended to kill "an uncertain but potentially large number of innocent men, women and children". They were earlier cleared of having a role in targeting the planes but were found guilty at a retrial of conspiracy to murder.(skynews)

Life in jail for airline terrorists
Three men have been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of plotting to kill hundreds of people in a terrorist attack. Ibrahim Savant, Arafat Waheed Khan and Waheed Zaman, were recruited by the ring leader of an al Qaeda-inspired plot to detonate home-made liquid bombs on transatlantic jets. All three will serve minimum terms of 20 years. Mr Justice Holroyde told Woolwich Crown Court that the men intended to kill "an uncertain but potentially large number of innocent men, women and children." The sentencing brings to an end a sprawling series of trials following an August 2006 operation to smash the largest terrorist plot ever discovered in Britain.(ITN)

PC Shot By Gunman Moat 'Bears No Malice'
The officer who was shot by Raoul Moat has said he "bears no malice" toward the gunman, despite the life-changing injuries he suffered. PC David Rathband remains in hospital, where his condition is described as "stable and comfortable". He was shot by Moat in an unprovoked attack at a roundabout in Newcastle on July 4. A day earlier, the former nightclub bouncer injured his ex-girlfriend Sam Stobbart and killed her new lover Chris Brown. Miss Stobbart is said to be making a good recovery in hospital. During the hunt for Moat, the 42-year-old officer requested that an explicit photo showing him bloodied and bruised be released in the hope of catching the fugitive.(skynews)

Police Dig For More Tobin Murder Victims
Police are searching two new sites in the Brighton area for more victims of serial killer Peter Tobin. Specialist search teams have arrived at addresses where the triple murderer lived during the late 80s. Officers have been using ground-penetrating radar to find out if any bodies or evidence are buried at the homes. The searches - at 152-154 Marine Parade, Brighton and two beauty shops with a flat above at 67 Station Road, Portslade - are part of a nationwide inquiry into whether Tobin is responsible for any more murders. The 63-year-old was told last December he would die in jail after being convicted of strangling 18-year-old Dinah McNicol.(skynews)

Britain's Balance Of Payments Gap Widens
Britain's balance of payments gap widened dramatically to £9.62bn in the first quarter of the year. The gap measures the difference between the value of goods and services we buy from abroad against the value of goods and services we sell overseas. The UK current account deficit with the rest of the world is now the biggest since the third quarter of 2007. The latest deficit figure compares with a surplus of over £520m in the last quarter of 2009, and is the equivalent of 2.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Meanwhile, the latest GDP figures have confirmed that the economy grew by 0.3% between January and March. The figure, which had already been revised up from an initial 0.2%, had been delayed by what the Office for National Statistics (ONS) called a "potential error".(skynews)

FTSE helped up by BP as miners weigh
The top shares rose on Monday, slightly extending last week's strong gains, as an advance from BP offset a retreat from miners, ahead of the U.S. Q2 reporting season and a batch of key economic data. By 12:03 p.m., the FTSE 100 was up 3.90 points, or 0.1 percent, at 5,136.84. "All very quiet. I think after last week's gains, there's good reason for people to sit on their hands for a while," said Jim Wood-Smith, head of research at Williams de Broe. The index rose 0.5 percent on Friday, taking its winning streak into a fourth straight day and notching up weekly gains of 6.1 percent -- its biggest weekly percentage rise in a year.(reuters)

Two Men Stabbed At T In The Park Festival
Two men have been seriously injured after being stabbed in the final hours of the T in the Park music festival. Tayside Police are investigating two attempted murders after the 20-year-olds were found with abdominal injuries on Sunday. The men were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where they are said to be in a serious but stable condition. They were found on a walkway between the main arena in Balado, near Kinross, and the campsite at around 11.50pm. Detective Inspector Steve Bissett said revellers may have witnessed something as they left the arena which could help the inquiry.(skynews)
