Osborne promises 'tough but fair' budget
In a statement after briefing Cabinet colleagues, Mr Osborne said the Budget aimed to protect children and pensioners and ensure that the richest bear the largest share of the burden. He said the measures being unveiled in the House of Commons would encourage enterprise and job creation. Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said the Budget would see a "significant acceleration" in reining in Britain's record £155 billion deficit, compared with the plans of the previous Labour administration.(ITN)

The chancellor of the exchequer will announce the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition's first budget before parliament at 12.30 pm. "My budget is tough but it will be fair," he said, cited by the official spokesman of Prime Minister David Cameron. "This is an unavoidable budget because of the mess we have to clear up. So the coalition government will take responsibility for balancing Britain's books within five years," he added.(AFP)

He then posed briefly on the steps of 11 Downing Street, flanked by his equally grim-faced Treasury team, before heading to the House of Commons to unveil his plans. Ex-Mr Gay UK officer on rape charge
Pc Mark Carter, 27, was charged after an incident at a hotel in Leeds city centre on December 19 last year. He appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court charged with one rape, three sexual assaults and an attempted sex assault. In a brief hearing, the court was told the charges involved four different alleged victims and are said to have taken place between December 18 and 19 last year.(press association)

Six weeks after the coalition Government took office, he will present an "emergency" plan to tackle Britain's record £155 billion deficit and show that the country can live within its means. Mr Osborne - the youngest Chancellor for more than a century - has said he will "significantly accelerate" measures to reduce the level of debt in order to rebuild confidence in the UK's battered economy.(press association)

Ruane urged to explain absence
The Sinn Fein MLA was due address the house on a review of capital spending within her department. But she was nowhere to be seen when the plenary session started, forcing speaker Willie Hay to move on to other business. Chair of Ms Ruane's scrutiny committee Mervyn Storey said the development was not acceptable. "This is a totally unacceptable situation that the minister was for whatever reason unable to be here," said the DUP member, asking Mr Hay to rule on the matter.(press association)
