Malta news: security threat
Missing worker found dead under rubble
The lifeless body of a 27-year-old Latvian construction worker was found early yesterday morning, a day after the collapse of the structure he was working in at the Seabank Hotel in Għadira Bay. He was one of two workers dismantling scaffolding at the newly-built structure, set to become a nightclub with an underlying car park, when the structure collapsed at around 10.40 on Tuesday morning. Rescuers quickly went on site and their efforts continued overnight, as hope that the man may have survived the ordeal remained. The operation of the Civil Protection Department as well as volunteers from the Specialised Personnel in Disaster Emergency Response, the K-9 unit (rescue dogs), the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit and the Red Cross, with volunteers from the St John Rescue Corps on standby. But the rescuers’ hopes were shattered at around 5.30am yesterday, when the man’s lifeless body was discovered in the rubble. The injuries he had sustained suggest that he died immediately. The search and rescue operation was a difficult one, as the state the structure ended up in made clearing the debris a potentially dangerous task.(independent.com) This is a tragedy, fate is hard on this person.

Migration not a security threat – European forum
Migration is a humanitarian concern and not a security issue according to a European non-governmental organisation that brings together more than 300 cities. The European Forum for Urban Security, which includes Zebbug, today approved a resolution calling for greater European solidarity with border cities and towns that face the brunt of migration flows. Forum president Guilherme Pinto acknowledged that migration was generally perceived as a security threat by people in border countries but insisted this was not correct. He said the way to fight this perception was for greater solidarity between countries and the encouragement of voluntary organisations to engage with migrant communities. The executive committee of the forum started meeting in Malta today and will continue doing so tomorrow. The meeting was hosted by the Zebbug council that joined the forum last year. Zebbug mayor Alfred Grixti told timesofmalta.com that when the forum was discussing migration last year he urged participants to come to Malta before adopting any resolution on the matter.(timesofmalta.com) The EU can not take advantage of these great migration?

€100,000 compensation for accident caused by poor state of road
Transport Malta has been ordered to pay almost €100,000 in damages to a man who suffered head injuries in a traffic accident which was caused by the bad state of a road. Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco delivered this judgment following an action for damages filed by Anthony Azzopardi and his son Dominic against Transport Malta. The accident took place in December 2007 in Mdina Road, Zebbug. Dominic Azzopardi was driving his father's car when he crashed as a result of faulty culverts and large potholes. His son suffered serious head injuries leading to a permanent disability as a result of the crash. The car was deemed a total loss. Mr Justice Farrugia Sacco pointed out that although the TM had failed to submit a reply contesting the Azzopardis' claims, the Authority had then filed written submissions contending that there was no direct link between the state of the road and the accident. The Authority also claimed that excessive speed on the part of Dominic Azzopardi had contributed to the accident. But the court found that TM could not exclude its liability by not producing any evidence and then making unsupported allegations.(timesofmalta.com) This man had really suffered because of this accident such as the money it costs
