Malta news: Worker dies tragically
Worker dies tragically after crane wire rope fails
A 59-year-old construction worker from Siġġiewi died tragically yesterday when he was hit by a load which plummeted from a tower crane after the steel lifting rope failed and snapped. The accident occurred on Windsor Terrace Street, corner with Sir Arthur Mercieca Street, in Sliema. The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) said in a statement that the crane was being used to lift a bundle of wood shuttering. From preliminary investigations, an overload did not seem to cause the wire rope failure. The load fell several metres, landing just behind the victim, sadly hitting him and killing him. The man, who was hit in the back, died on the spot. Paramedics, members of the Civil Protection Department, and the police rushed to the site, shortly after receiving the emergency call at around 11.10am. A medical team from Mater Dei Hospital also called to give first aid, but the man was certified dead on site. In its statement, the OHSA reminded that the setting up and operation of all lifting appliances (including cranes) is covered by a number of specific provisions in the code of practice for the building and construction industry.(independent.com.mt) The question remains why the rope broke. Once the circumstances of the accident revealed a judgment may be rendered.

Leading private jets operator acquires base in Malta
Hangar8, one of Europe’s leading operators of private jets, and the world’s largest charter operator of Hawker aircraft, announced yesterday that it has acquired an initial 49% interest, with an option to gain 51% control, in a new joint venture in Malta. Infrastructure, Transport, and Communications Minister Austin Gatt presented an Air Operators Certificate to Hangar8 Malta CEO Michael O’Brien during an event on Apron 1 at Malta International Airport yesterday. Mr O’Brien said the benefits of the link with Malta are that the country has positioned itself as a service-oriented and tax efficient jurisdiction to own and operate aircraft and therefore will be seen as an attractive destination for new owners. He said he got to know about the opportunity to invest in Malta when he met Malta Enterprise representatives during an aviation expo in Dubai. The acquisition of Hangar8’s base in Malta results from an aircraft register having been created following the entry into force of the Malta Registration Act in October 2010. Dr Gatt, on his, part, said: “We are proud to be associated with Hangar8 through their investment in Malta. The number of registered aircraft increased to 104, representing a 21% increase, last year. The future is very bright.”(independent.com.mt) After a time of political crisis and overshadowed by the European crisis, it is good to know at least to have some good news.

Man allegedly stole to fund wife's cancer treatment
A man who allegedly stole to fund his late wife's cancer treatment was remanded in custody but was given special permission to pick up his children from school and explain the situation before he is taken to prison. Glen Debattisa, 52, of Sta Venera, and Matthew Portelli, 25 of San Gwann, pleaded not guilty to breaking into and stealing from seven petrol stations between September and November last year. Both also pleaded not guilty to relapsing. Police Inspector James Grech told Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani that Mr Debattista had been stealing to fund his wife's cancer treatment. She has since passed away. Lawyer Jose Herrera pointed out that Mr Debattista was currently the sole carer of his four minor children, the youngest being 11. At this point Mr Debattista asked to speak to the court and told the magistrate that besides being a market hawker, he was also a full-time carer for his children.(timesofmalta.com) We should understand why men have committed much of your in gas stations. And a man who steals to save his wife should be caught up by the Church.
