Malta news: emergency road network
Malta is under water
Government workers are working at both ends of Valley Road after the damage caused by yesterday's flooding.
The busy road was closed to all traffic this morning. Substantial parts of Valley Road were dug up by the water. Workers were this morning preparing the road foundations for resurfacing. At the Msida end, an operation started yesterday to remove debris, particularly boulders and stones washed down the valley. The area was a graveyard of cars. Several lamp posts and road signs were damaged. A retaining wall and an old house collapsed. Ground floor residents and shop owners were cleaning up after water invaded their premises. A smell of sewage pervaded the area. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Resources Minister George Pullicino visited the area. Mr Pullicino said that 100 tons of debris were collected from Valley Road just this morning.  Cleaning operations were also carried out in Gozo including at the main road leading to Mgarr, the road leading to Xaghra and that leading to Nadur as well as in the roads surrounding Victoria. Extensive work was also carried out at Xlendi Bay, Marsalforn, Wied l-Ghasri, Kercem and Munxar.
Emergency repair on road network
Transport Malta has carried out a detailed assessment of the damages incurred on the road network due to the weather in the past 36 hours and commenced repair works. Work commenced late last night in hard hit areas and include the reinstatement of a number of retaining walls, service culverts, fragmented asphalt and broken pavements. Works have already been carried out at Valletta and Mosta roads in Lija, and at Aldo Moro and Labour roads in Marsa.
